Abalone farm closed after virus outbreak, wildlife officials to lead efforts

A quarantine order at an endangered southern Abalone farm near St. Louis sparked a quarantine Wednesday for a nearby abalone farm that will host two million birds as the virus spreads, wildlife officials said.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Wednesday that it ordered a quarantine of the Abalone Farm in St. Paul, and sent the Abalone Farm's management team and the county staff on "site" immediately. The farm, which was operated by John and Linda Zagzberg since 1993, will temporarily suspend harvesting at least until further notice and receive an eBird license to monitor any avian contacts.

The Zagzbergs have also been granted a 90-day state-of-the-art quarantine center for birds at the Abalone Farm and will provide technical support to help the government and local wildlife agencies get to the bottom of the bird flu. Officials are also moving a veterinarian to St. Paul to oversee the Quarantine Center.

"The Zagzbergs are the quintessential example of what it means to live in a big city and still support our community, and their decision will do so much good," said U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Commissioner Joe Scanlan. "When these communities are served by the finest institutions in the country, we see real public benefit."

U.S. Fish and Wildlife biologists will conduct genetic testing on the eggs and hatchlings before placing them in the wild for the winter.

In addition to the Abalone Farm, the quarantine and center include eight other Abalone Farm farms in Montana, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Washington that have received a similar quarantine order. At least 17 Abalone Farm abalone farms in Minnesota have also received quarantine and center-issued eBird license orders. The quarantine of at least 22 other Abalone Farm farms were also lifted during the outbreak.

Eagle conservationists say those farms are responsible for the highest percentage of the Abalone's population in Montana, the second-highest in the United States, after the Great Plains.

"We believe that those farms are the only farms that can effectively guard this incredible bird population," said Brian Buell, an Eagle leader from New Jersey. "We're confident the herd we put out in September will recover from this massive bird flu, but I'm very concerned about the future of these very few remaining herds."
